Effigy features a flute soloist who reads Emma Lazarus’s poem (“Give me your tired, your weary, your huddled masses yearning to breathe free…”) a la Lincoln Portrait over a hymn tune interweaving melodic fragments from the Star Spangled Banner, the Battle Hymn of the Republic, and La Marseillaise. In Effigy, the band creates the sounds of New York Harbor: the wind, the surf, seagulls, and ships, as the narrator conjures the image of Lady Liberty, welcoming the next Americans to our shores.
Effigy was premiered by the United States Air Force Band of the Golden West in Escondido California on July 4th, 2026, conducted by Captain Brian O’Donnell, featuring Master Sergeant Sarah Howard-Carter as flutist and narrator, in celebration of the 250th anniversary of American independence. A follow-on performance was given on August 7th at the 54th Annual National Flute Association Convention in Portland, Oregon.
The first movement of Effigy, a setting of Percy Bysshe Shelley’s famous “Ozymandias” poem, will be released at a future date.
